When selecting a mallet there are a few basics to consider. The height of the mallet, its weight and the class of ball being used are all factors determining what mallet is best for you.

MALLET HEIGHT

Generally speaking, we have found that most people are comfortable with a 36" mallet. Taller or shorter players may want to consider having a mallet sized to suit their preferences. Another influencing factor in determining mallet height is the how the player grips their mallet. The 3 commonly used gripping positions are the Standard grip, Irish grip and the Solomon grip. Before deciding on a mallet height, new players should try out a range of mallet heights in order to decide which is most comfortable.

MALLET WEIGHT

Physically stronger players can play better with a lighter mallet. Conversely, if you are not, a heavier mallet will help you accomplish longer shots. The downside to a heavy mallet is that certain shots, such as stop shots, are more difficult to control.

NOTE ABOUT WEIGHT

Mallets designed for use with the tournament balls, weighing 16 oz, should not  be used to hit lighter weight balls made for recreational play. By the same token, lighter mallets will suffer premature wear and possible breakage if paired with the heavier tournament balls.

HEAD SIZE

There is no regulation dictating the size of a mallet head, although if it is longer than 9", it must have marks clearly showing the 9" distance from each striking face. This is to position a ball that has crossed the boundary in a USCA-rules game. A longer head is heavier and more stable during the swing. The weight however, may be detrimental in certain shots where a lighter mallet weight would be better suited to the stroke (such as a stop-shot).

Mallet Options

When choosing your mallet, there are a few options to consider:

  • mallet height (measured from the ground to the top of the shaft)

  • head size (measured from face to face)

  • upper grip color (see the color page for choices)

  • sightline color on Brighton & Sport mallet heads (see color page)

  • shaft type (aluminum or ash)

Make your own mallet

The great benefit of our Taper-Lock fastening system is the ability to mate any Oakley Woods shaft to any of our heads. Although we stock the most mallets for immediate shipment, at a moment's notice, we can create a combination just the way you want. All you need to do is find the pair that best suits your requirements. We have created a chart of all possible combinations for you to select from. If the mallet is to be gripped, take a short visit to our color chart to see your choices there.

Please note - the weights are rounded to the nearest ounce and based on a 36" tall mallet with a 9" head (8-1/2" head in the case of the Extreme mallet). Shaft length variations change the weight by 1 ounce per inch.
