BETTER LISTENING

BETTER THINKING
BETTER SPEAKING

WHAT IS TOASTMASTERS?

Established in 1924, Toastmasters International is a worldwide non-profit organization with over 180,000 members. The mission of each Toastmaster club is to provide a supportive environment for each member to gain self-confidence and personal growth as they develop communication and leadership skills.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Self-paced programs allow each member to progress as quickly as his/her needs dictate. All new members receive a manual containing ten assignments and, after all presentations, receive a positive evaluation from a specified club member. Other members contribute written evaluations.

Following the ten basic speeches, members choose from a large assortment of speech manuals. A new member may also choose to have an experienced Toastmaster guide/coach/mentor them in their development.

HOW OFTEN WOULD I SPEAK?

You place your name on the speaking schedule as often as you feel comfortable doing so. Most meetings have time for three speakers and, in consultation with the Vice President of Education and/or your mentor, you determine your comfort level.

WHAT OTHER SKILLS WILL I DEVELOP?

Each meeting has a leader, called The Toastmaster, who serves as the Master of Ceremonies. Participation in planning and conducting a meeting improves your organizational and leadership skills.

Even if you think you 'can't tell a joke' you, as the humorist for a club meeting, discover how quickly you learn to tell a joke or relate a funny experience.

You learn to 'think on your feet' during the impromptu speaking portion of the meeting. Toastmasters calls it Table Topics. A Table Topics Master selects a topic and calls on various members to speak on that topic (without preparation) for up to two minutes.  Guests can relax and watch if they choose.

Additional opportunities for better listening, thinking and speaking come when you participate as a Sergeant-at-Arms, Timekeeper, Grammarian, Speech Evaluator or General Evaluator.
