| The
game of Croquet has been a popular family activity for more than one
hundred years! One of the biggest reasons for the game's appeal is that it
can be enjoyed by any member of the family, at any age, with no special
athletic ability requirements. Now you can discover how much fun croquet
can be for the entire family! REVIEWS: "Anyone who has pitched a horseshoe or picked up a croquet mallet on a lazy summer afternoon knows the pleasure of these simple games, which require little investment in time or money and a very small outdoor space. The format of each of these videos (a third one on badminton is also available) is much the same: there is an introduction to the sport with a history, the rules, and basic techniques. Technical skill instruction, game strategies, and tips from professional tournament players at the end of each video are likely intended for those who want to compete beyond their backyard. Since there are few if any comparable videos available, these programs certainly would make a nice addition to a large public library, particularly those that service retirement communities. Academic sports and recreation departments may also want to have access to them for teaching more than the basics of life-long sports." ~ The Library Journal "No wonder croquet has been popular since the
mid-1800s--it can be played by anyone, young or old, in a backyard or
small grassy area. The video begins with a short history of the game
illustrated by paintings and old photos. Equipment is explained, followed
by a diagram of the layout of a basic nine-wicket court, which is
adaptable. The rules of croquet are simple but can be modified depending
on player level. The winner is the person or team with the most points,
but how to score and achieve bonuses is only part of the game. Players may
use many strategies to move the ball between the small wickets. For
example, hitting an opponent's ball with your own--a move called
roquet--can give you an advantage for your next shot or impair your
opponent's shot. Eileen Kupstas Soo, a croquet teacher and tournament
player, shows how to hold the mallet and gives playing tips. The
narrator's tone is well modulated and clear, and directions easy to
follow." |

| Horseshoe
pitching has been around since the second century, when games such as
chariot races, archery, and discus throwing were popular. Today, it is
estimated that upwards of fifteen million enthusiasts enjoy pitching
horseshoes in the United States and Canada! Find out why this backyard
sport has become so popular for the entire family! A most thorough examination ... this is recommended. Also available: 'Let's Play Croquet!' and 'Let's Play Badminton!'" ~ Video Librarian |
